FAQ
Questions people ask us first
If yours isn't here, call. There's no question we haven't heard.
Is your help really free?
Yes, for households that qualify. We're a nonprofit, funded by donors and grants. The court charges a filing fee, which it can waive or let you pay in installments.
What does it cost the court to file?
The bankruptcy court charges a filing fee for each chapter. If your income is low enough, the court can waive it for Chapter 7, or let you pay it in installments.
How do I know whether I qualify?
Call us. We ask about your household size, income and debts, and tell you on the same call.
Will I lose my house or car?
Most people who file keep both. Exemptions protect a set amount of equity, and Chapter 13 can help you catch up on missed payments.
What happens to my credit?
A bankruptcy stays on your credit report for years, but your score often starts recovering sooner than people expect, because the debts are gone.
Can bankruptcy stop a garnishment?
Yes. Filing stops most wage garnishments right away.
Can I get rid of student loans?
Usually not in bankruptcy, though it's possible in some cases. We'll tell you honestly whether yours is one of them.
Do I have to come to your office?
No. We meet in person, by phone or by video, whatever works for you.
Still wondering?
Ask an attorney. The first meeting is free.
